Advanced Diploma of Stage Management

The stage manager is often the most important person on the production. They are excellent communicators, extremely well organised and have both artistic and technical stagecraft skills. This course provides the background knowledge and the practical training to co-ordinate and run main-stage and small-scale theatre productions. (See video of the stage set-up for the 2010 ACTT Production of ‘Lord of the Flies’)

Practical real-world training

This is a full-time course combining classes and practical training sessions. As the students’ skills develop practical assignments are undertaken, both supervised and unsupervised. The nature of work in the entertainment industry demands that skills are adaptable to a variety of situations and the training addresses this by giving students exposure to a variety of projects with increasing autonomy. The course comprises twenty five units, eleven compulsory and fourteen electives selected from the Entertainment Training Package. Subjects include Stage Management, Calling the Production, Organising and Monitoring Bump In/Bump Out, Organising and Facilitating Rehearsals, Effective Workplace Relations, OH&S and Security, Analysing Performance Script, Realising Productions, Managing Budgets and Risk.

Theatre Experience & Industry Secondments

The course is run in association with the college’s extensive and varied production program and the stage management students work on these with a range of professional practitioners at venues that includes ACTT’s performance space, the Cleveland St Theatre. The course also provides opportunities for industry secondments and students in recent years have spent time with the Sydney Theatre Company, Ensemble Theatre, Lyric Theatre, Capitol Theatre, The Sydney Festival and the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre. Past graduates have been very successful in gaining employment in the industry at many of Australia’s theatres.
